The differential:
What does a Differential do and how does it work?
Just click on the video to the right for a video that explains how a differential works
(it's the best explaination that we have seen).
The differential is the mechanical component that spins both the left and right wheels, but lets them rotate at different speeds so that the vehicle can make turns. When a vehicle makes a turn, the outer wheel has to turn faster than the inner wheel, due to the difference in the length of the paths they take. The differential is located between the two wheels, and is attached to each wheel by an axle shaft. Four-wheel drive vehicles have a separate differential for each pair of wheels, connected through a transfer case.
Eventually, the protective additives in gear oil break down. Replacing the gear oil at the manufacturer's required service interval will help to prolong the life of the gears and bearings within the differential ensuring your car's turning remains nice and smooth.
Differential fluid provides lubrication to gears, bearings, shafts and other internal components. Heat, pressure and friction can slowly breakdown the additives in the differential fluid. In addition, small particles of metal and clutch material may come off as they wear and these particles can mix with the fluid. Fluids can also become contaminated with water.
The fluids in the differentials and transfer case operate under high stress levels and heat. All vehicle manufacturers require that these fluids be changed at specific mileage intervals. Changing the fluid in your differential will extend its life by removing dirt and moisture and by maintaining lubrication and minimizing high speed foaming.

Kwik Kar of Argyle's Differential services:
Rear Differential - this service replaces all of the gear box fluid in the rear differential with fresh fluid that is specifically designed for your vehicle. The fluid is extractd by a vacuum machine which removes 100% of the old fluid. All rear wheel drive and four wheel drive vehicles have a rear differential.
Front Differential - this service replaces all of the gear box fluid in the front differential with fresh fluid that is specifically designed for your vehicle. The fluid is extractd by a vacuum machine which removes 100% of the old fluid. All four wheel drive drive vehicles have a front differential.
Transfer Case - this service replaces all of the gear box fluid in the transfer case with fresh fluid that is specifically designed for your vehicle. The fluid is extractd by a vacuum machine which removes 100% of the old fluid. All four wheel drive vehicles have a transfer case.
Kwik Kar of Argyle recommends these services based on mileage recommendations from the vehicle's manufacturer. Mileage recommendations will vary based on normal or severe service (trailer towing, etc).
